Individual + Private Group // Half-day + Full-day // From $53/person

Skiing is one of the most rewarding things you can pick up as an adult, and Gudauri is one of the best places in the Caucasus to do it. Wide, gentle beginner slopes, high altitude snow that lasts well into spring, and a compact resort where nothing is far from the gondola. Whether you are on skis for the first time or working to carve cleaner lines on reds and blacks, our English-speaking instructors will meet you where you are and push you further than you expected.

Skiing builds on itself: what you drill in lesson two sets up lesson three. Four lessons gives you enough time to get past the basics, feel real progression, and leave Gudauri skiing at a level you can actually build on next season. That is why we offer a discount when you book four or more.

Which format?

How to pick the right format for your ski trip

Rule of thumb

Skiing rewards focused repetition. Individual is the fastest path to parallel turns because the instructor can catch your weight shift, pole plant, and edge timing on every single run. Private Group works beautifully when two to four skiers are genuinely at the same level, as you can push and encourage each other while sharing the cost.

Individual

Just you and your instructor

  • Fastest progression. Ski-specific mechanics like pole timing, weight distribution, and edge angle get addressed every run, not at the end of the session.
  • Best for first-timers learning the snowplow and linking turns, and for skiers working on specific technique: carving, off-piste intro, moguls.
  • The lesson plan is built entirely around you: your level, your goals, the terrain you want to ski by the end of the trip.

Private Group

2 to 4 skiers at the same level

  • Best value when everyone in your group is genuinely at the same level. One flat price covers the whole group of 2 to 4.
  • Closed booking: just your group, one instructor, no strangers. The instructor sets the route based on your shared ability.
  • Skiing together is more fun than skiing apart. Just make sure you are honest about levels. If your group spans beginner and intermediate, two separate bookings will get everyone further.

When is your lesson?

A half-day lesson runs in either the morning or the afternoon block. A full-day lesson is both blocks with a 1-hour lunch break in the middle.

Half-day

2.5 hours

  • Great for brushing up after time off, or for testing the waters before you commit to a full day or a multi-day block. One focused coaching block, then the rest of the day is yours to drill what your instructor showed you on the same green and blue runs while the movement is still fresh in your legs.
  • Good for anyone fitting a lesson into one half of the day, or pacing yourself across a week of lessons.
  • Afternoon slots are often underrated. Softer snow, shorter lift lines, and the mountain quiets down. Morning lessons run from 10:30 to 13:00. Afternoon lessons run from 14:00 to 16:30.

Full-day

5 hours

  • For skiers who want to progress the fastest. The afternoon session builds directly on what clicked in the morning, and that compounding is where skiing makes its biggest single-day jumps.
  • Most improvement in one day. Goals like getting to parallel, linking reds, or locking in your carving technique are all realistic with a full day and the right instruction.
  • Morning session 10:30 to 13:00, lunch break, then afternoon 14:00 to 16:30.

Skill levels

Skiing rewards every level. We have taught them all.

Two independent feet, two edges on each ski, poles in both hands: skiing opens up a different skill set at every stage. First-timers get the snowplow and the magic carpet. Advanced skiers get edge refinement and terrain that actually challenges them. The better you ski, the more of Gudauri you can reach.

Beginner

New to skiing or still getting comfortable on greens. The magic carpet at New Gudauri is your starting point: how the boots feel, how to balance on flat snow, the snowplow shape that lets you control your speed. Stopping before turning, turning before picking up pace. Once you have that foundation your instructor builds the rest at your speed, run by run, up to the first chairlift and beyond.

Intermediate

You are carving blues with confidence and ready to push further. This is the stage where technique really pays off. Your instructor works on refining your parallel turns, sharpening your edge control, and building the range to ski steeper terrain. Four sessions at this level is the single biggest jump most skiers ever make.

Advanced

You ski reds and blacks comfortably and want to sharpen something specific: carving reds at speed, short-radius control in tight lines, steeper off-piste, or mogul technique. A full-day Individual lesson is the highest-leverage day you can book at this level, with an instructor who can take you to the next level. When you are ready to leave the groomed runs entirely, see our freeride lessons.

A typical day

What a ski lesson day looks like

  1. 1

    48 hours before

Our support team creates a WhatsApp group with you and your instructor. Meeting point, weather update, gear questions, and any logistics for your group all live there. If you booked rental at Aviator, we drop the reservation form in there too so your kit is waiting when you arrive.

  2. 2

    Meeting up

You meet at the bottom of the gondola in New Gudauri, right by the big map. Your instructor will be there in Vagabond colors, easy to spot. The gondola ride up is the briefing: what you have skied before, what you are hoping to get out of the day, anything that has been holding your skiing back. By the time you step off at the top, there is already a plan.

  3. 3

    The lesson

A quick warm-up run to see where you are, then the work starts. Your instructor reads your body position, weight distribution, and edge timing and builds the session around what will move the needle most today. For beginners that might be the first linked turns on a green. For intermediates it might be getting out of the wedge and into parallel. Your instructor watches your technique on every run and gives live feedback as you go. Half-day is 2.5 hours. Full-day is 2.5 hours, a one-hour lunch break, then another 2.5 hours in the afternoon.

  4. 4

    After

Your instructor drops a short note in the WhatsApp group with what you worked on and what to drill next if you want it. That makes the next lesson, this trip or next season, start two steps ahead. Tipping is appreciated if you enjoyed the day. A customary tip is 10 to 15%, paid in cash at the end of the lesson.

Kids

Ski lessons for kids

We offer ski lessons for kids from age 5. The beginner rope tow at New Gudauri calls for a level of leg strength and coordination that most kids hit around five, so that is where we start.

Beginner kids aged 5 to 7 get a 1-on-1 lesson only. At that age the ratio matters for safety and for keeping it fun. Kids 8 and over, or younger kids who can already ski on their own, go up to 2 per instructor.

We recommend booking a separate kids lesson and a separate adult lesson. Kids and adults progress at very different speeds on skis, and mixing the two in one booking means someone is always waiting.

For 3 and 4 year olds, parents are the right first instructors. Skis are a lot of hardware for a small child, and having a familiar face right there makes a huge difference. Gentle terrain and zero pressure is the right recipe.

The biggest mistake parents make with young skiers is pushing technique before the kids are having fun. Ski instruction at that age is really just keeping the love of snow alive. If they are grinning when they take the skis off, that is a perfect lesson. That is how families end up skiing together for years.

Why ski with us

Why skiers keep coming back

Skiing technique is specific: your weight, your edges, your poles, the angle of your knees. All of it matters and all of it is easier to fix when your instructor can explain it clearly. Every Vagabond ski instructor speaks fluent English as a first or second language, because the language barrier mid-turn is the fastest way to lose a student.

Vagabond has been on this mountain since 2017. Over 200 five-star Google reviews. A return rate above 60%. Skiers come back, season after season. That kind of continuity is rare in Gudauri, and it is the thing we are most proud of.

Being travelers ourselves, we know what it is like to arrive somewhere new and not know who to trust. We are easy to reach, quick to reply on WhatsApp, and happy to answer any question: conditions, gear advice, where to ski on your off-lesson days, the best mulled wine at the top. Just ask.

Rental gear: Aviator Ski Rental

We partner with Aviator Ski Rental in New Gudauri, 100 meters from the gondola, red and white sign you cannot miss. Vagabond clients get a discount and we send a reservation form before your trip so your kit is ready when you arrive. You walk in, gear is fitted, you walk straight to the gondola.

Bring your own gloves, jacket, and pants if you can. The selection in Gudauri shops is limited, and personal-fit outerwear makes a real difference in comfort. Skis, boots, poles, and goggles are all fine to rent at Aviator.

Helmets are required for kids and strongly recommended for adults. Aviator carries the full range. If you are coming with kids, mention sizes in the WhatsApp group so we can flag it ahead of time.

Ski lesson FAQ

The questions that come up most often before booking. Message us on WhatsApp for anything we missed.

  • Yes. Every Vagabond ski instructor speaks fluent English as a first or second language. The school was founded in 2017 specifically to fill that gap in Gudauri. Explaining edge angle, weight transfer, or pole timing requires real language, and that is exactly what you get.
  • An Individual Ski half-day (1 person, 2.5 hours) starts at $140. An Individual Ski full-day (1 person, 5 hours) starts at $250. A Private Group half-day for 2 to 4 people starts at $210 total for the whole group, and a Private Group full-day starts at $360 total. Lift ticket and rental gear are not included.
  • Individual is the right call for first-time skiers. Skiing starts with the snowplow, and getting that shape dialed fast takes constant attention that a one-on-one lesson delivers and a group setting cannot. Private Group works well once you have the basics and you are progressing alongside two to four friends or family at the same level. The per-person cost drops sharply and skiing with your people is genuinely more fun.
  • 2 to 4 people, all at the same level. A Private Group is a closed group, not a public class. You book it together with your friends or family and the instructor is just for your group. Larger groups can be split across two instructors so each one keeps a 4-person maximum.
  • Yes. Book at least 4 lessons and you will end the week a genuinely different skier. Four lessons takes a beginner from the magic carpet to linked turns on a green run. Eight lessons and a first-timer is typically skiing parallel on blue slopes. Skiing builds on itself quickly once the foundations are solid, and the half-day format keeps you fresh enough to actually absorb what you are learning each day.
  • Your first ski lesson starts on the magic carpet at New Gudauri. You learn how the boots feel, how skis slide and steer on flat ground, and how to make a snowplow shape with your feet to control your speed. Stopping comes before turning. Once that feels natural your instructor moves you to the first short slope, then the first chair, then your first linked turns. Every step has a clear goal and you move to the next one when you are ready, not on a timer.
  • Not at first. For your first few lessons we usually leave the poles behind, as they tend to be more of a distraction than a help while you are learning to balance and steer. Once you are comfortable making turns, your instructor introduces poles at the right time.
  • The lesson price covers instruction only. The lift ticket is bought at resort lift-base booths, roughly 70 GEL per day. Rental gear is from our partner Aviator Ski Rental in New Gudauri, 100 meters from the gondola. Vagabond clients get a discount at Aviator and we send a reservation form before your trip so the gear is ready when you arrive.
  • We partner with Aviator Ski Rental in New Gudauri, 100 meters from the gondola, red and white sign. The selection in Gudauri is limited and personal-fit outerwear makes a big difference. Skis, boots, poles, and goggles are all fine to rent at Aviator.
  • Ski lessons almost always run as planned. Gudauri has sheltered lower-mountain pistes that hold good conditions even in storms, and your instructor will route the session around the best available snow and visibility. If the resort closes all lifts due to extreme wind, which is rare, we reschedule to another day in your trip at no cost. We will not take you out in conditions that are unsafe for your level.
  • Cancellation terms for ski-school lessons are covered in our Trip Agreement. Specific timelines and refund rules live there so they stay current and consistent across products. Read the Trip Agreement before booking and message us on WhatsApp if you need clarity on a specific situation.
  • 5 years old. Gudauri's beginner rope tow requires a level of muscle and coordination that kids typically develop around age 5, so we do not accept younger students. Beginners aged 5 to 7 are 1-on-1 only. For 3 and 4 year olds, parents are the best first instructors: a familiar face on easy terrain is genuinely the best introduction to snow at that age.
