Gudauri has some of the most accessible off-piste terrain in the Caucasus. From mellow powder beside the pistes and the rolling Tatra Fields to a fifteen-minute bootpack out to Chrdli, there is off-piste for every level here, and knowing which zones are holding the best snow on a given day is most of the game. We have been riding this mountain since 2017. The freeride day puts you with a guide who knows where the snow is.

When does the day run?
A freeride day uses both sessions. Morning 10:30 to 13:00, one hour for lunch, then afternoon 14:00 to 16:30. Total riding time: 5 hours.

Who this is for
You ski or ride everything groomed without thinking about it. You have ventured off-piste at least a little and want more. You are curious about powder technique, line choice, and reading terrain without the guesswork of figuring it out solo.
The freeride day is not a skills lesson, but you will pick things up. The guide points out what the slope is doing, where the snow loaded up overnight, which entry gives you the cleanest line out. That is the kind of knowledge that takes seasons to accumulate. You get it in a day.
Honest gate: confident parallel turns on red runs and some comfort in ungroomed snow. If you are still thinking about your turns on a groomed blue, book a ski lesson or snowboard lesson first and come back to freeride when you are ready.
Tatra Fields
Gentle, open powder right beside the pistes on the way back to New Gudauri. Includes Tatra Canyon: a natural canyon with halfpipe-shaped walls you can surf up and down. A great first taste of off-piste.
Bidara and Kudebi
Long backcountry descents into untracked terrain for strong riders. More vertical, more commitment, and the kind of lines that take most of a day to fully appreciate.
Powder technique
Weighting, float, and breathing room between turns. The guide walks you through what changes in powder and corrects the moves that work on piste but hold you back in untracked snow.
Line choice
Reading a slope before you drop in. Where the snow is most stable, which exit keeps your options open, what the guide checks for every time. The stuff you cannot Google.

Easy access
Tatra Fields + Rock Garden
Powder right beside the pistes. Open, gentle rolls through the Tatra Fields and the Rock Garden, a short lift-lapped line with some natural features. Good snow, no big commitment.
Short hike, big reward
Chrdli
A fifteen-minute bootpack opens up a wide face that usually holds great snow long after the lower mountain has skied off. Worth every step.
Serious backcountry
Bidara Ridge, Kudebi, Sadzele
Long descents into deep untracked terrain for strong riders. Sadzele's north-facing backside is also available for groups with touring or splitboard setups.
Gudauri spans a wide range of aspects and elevations. Whatever conditions are doing on any given day, the guide moves around the mountain to find the best snow.
A typical freeride day
Night before
We create a WhatsApp group with you and your guide. You get a conditions update, the meeting point, and a reminder to confirm your avalanche gear. If you need a rental kit arranged, let us know here and we sort it out before the morning.
Meet at the gondola base
You meet your guide at the gondola base in New Gudauri at 10:30. The guide runs a beacon check on everyone right there at the lift line: beacons on transmit, search drill, all clear. Then a quick conditions briefing: what the guide has been watching, what terrain is on the plan, and how the day might adjust if conditions shift.
Morning session: 10:30 to 13:00
First runs are warm-up laps to see how the snow is actually skiing today. The guide reads the group and picks terrain that matches both conditions and your level. Line by line, the guide shows you what they are looking at before each drop and why one entry works better than another. 2.5 hours of riding.
Lunch break: 13:00 to 14:00
One hour off the hill. Lunch is on your own. The guide picks up on any weather or snow changes during the break and adjusts the afternoon plan if needed.
Afternoon session: 14:00 to 16:30
The afternoon is often when the guide opens up more committing terrain. The morning laps have given the guide a read on how the group moves, and conditions have had time to settle. Another 2.5 hours, finishing at 16:30. Total riding time: 5 hours.
Wrap-up
The guide drops a note in the WhatsApp group: what you rode, what stood out, and what to focus on next time. A solid start for your next freeride day, whether that is tomorrow or next season. Tipping is appreciated if you had a great day. A customary tip is 10 to 15%, paid in cash.
Gear + prerequisites
Required. No exceptions.
Avalanche gear is required. This is your kit, and you ride with it every run. If you do not own a beacon, shovel, and probe, let us know when you book and we will arrange a rental for you.
At the start of every day the guide runs a beacon check at the lift base and gives an avalanche-awareness briefing: local conditions the guide has been tracking, what the terrain calls look like, what to do if something happens. You do not need prior avalanche training. You do need your gear.
Freeride-specific skis or a snowboard with enough sidecut and float to handle off-piste are important. Standard piste rental skis work but limit what you can ride. If you are renting, message us on WhatsApp and we can advise on what to ask for.
Skill prerequisite
Confident on red runs and comfortable venturing off-piste. You do not need to be an expert, but you need to be in control when the terrain gets variable. If you are not sure, message us a short video of your riding and we will give you an honest answer.
Why freeride with us
We have been on this mountain since 2017. Our guides know where the snow holds after a warm spell, which aspects fill in first after a storm, and which lines are worth the traverse versus the ones that look good on the map but ski poorly. That map-in-your-head takes years to build. You get it on day one.
All our guides speak fluent English. When the guide is reading a slope and walking you through the decision, you hear the whole thing, not a half-translated summary. That matters more off-piste than it does on a groomed run.
Groups stay small: 2 to 4 riders maximum. Small groups move faster, reach better terrain, and keep the safety margin real. We do not stack groups to fill a day.
If the snow is bad, we say so and adjust. We have called off terrain choices mid-day because conditions changed. That is not a failure, that is the job.
